|
|
Summary: If you have problems for importing and editing Sony PMW-F3 video clips in Final Cut Pro 6/7 or FCP X, you can follow this simple tutorial to transcode Sony F3 XDCAM EX files to Apple ProRes for Final Cut product.
The Sony XDCAM EX line of cameras offers a great form factor and workflow, Sony PMW-F3 is a hot one. While there are still many users have expressed concern about how to use the XDCAM EX footage that is recorded to SxS cards on the Sony PMW-F3 camera. After all, Final Cut Pro will not work with these files natively. In this page, I will share two easy solutions for you.
Sony has provided an efficient and simple tool called “XDCAM Transfer” that addresses this exact problem. XDCAM Transfer simply changes the file wrapper from the MP4 file that Final Cut Pro doesn’t understand to a Quicktime MOV file that Final Cut Pro can edit natively.
Note: This workflow is only for Intel based Macs (MacBook Pro Laptops and MacPro Towers) with OS X v10.5 or later and Final Cut Pro 7 installed. This procedure will not work for PowerMac systems or Final Cut Pro 6 users.
Since some limits exist with the plug-in, an alternative way is to transcode Sony F3 XDCAM EX video to Apple ProRes, Final Cut Pro most compatible format. Brorsoft Video Converter for Mac is recommended to you. It is an easy-to-use yet powerful XDCAM Converter and Editor. It's able to transcode XDCAM EX native MP4 or rewrapped MXF files to any popular video formats including MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV, FLV, MPEG, as well as some professional encoders, Apple Intermediate Codec, ProRes and DNxHD - ensuring maximum editing quality and efficiency when working with Final Cut Pro, iMovie, Adobe Premiere or Avid Media Composer, etc. Just download it and follow the tutorial below guide to achieve your goal.
Guide: Convert Sony F3 footage to ProRes 422 for Final Cut Pro
Step 1. Launch the program and click the "Add" button to load PMW-F3 separate .mp4 files for converting.
Step 2. Click on the “Format” and you will get a dropdown menu and then select Final Cut Pro > Apple ProRes 422 (*.mov), which is the best format for Final Cut Pro.
Step 3. Click “Settings” to set video resolution (1920×1080/1440×1080/1280×720/720×480), bitrate(from 1Mbps to 20Mbps), frame rate (24p/30p) as you like. To deinterlace, crop, trim XDCAM MP4 video, click “Edit” menu.
Step 4. After above settings, hit “Convert” button to start transcoding Sony F3 MP4 to ProRes for directly importing to FCP.
After a quick conversion, you can click the Open icon to locate the converted ProRes MOV files. Now import your new ProRes files into FCP 6/7X. At this point the raw XDCAM EX footage will not be needed for your editing workflow, but you can choose to keep the raw footage for archiving process.
